Austin Backus is an Associate Attorney at Parton & Associates, PLLC passionately fighting for clients in the area of State Criminal Defense.
Mr. Backus holds a Juris Doctorate from University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill School of Law, a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from University of Alabama, and is a licensed member of the North Carolina State Bar. Mr. Backus’ introduction to criminal law and the plight of those charged with crimes came during law school, where he worked in the Davie and Davidson County District Attorney’s Offices. His time spent working with the State gave him unique insight into what district attorneys value and look for in determining how to move forward with their prosecution. Mr. Backus developed a passion for the accused and gained his first defense experience working as Volunteer for Center for Death Penalty Litigation, a non-profit organization that provides direct representation to inmates on North Carolina’s death row. Coming from a family with a history of active duty military service has given Mr. Backus a deep appreciation for those who have served our country in the armed services, and his experience also includes work with the Veterans Legal Assistance Project where he helped to facilitate private legal counsel to impoverished veterans excluded from VA health and disability benefits. Mr. Backus’s courtroom experience and litigation skills were expanded through a position working for Judge Joe J. Volpe in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas.
When he is not fighting for his clients, Mr. Backus enjoys watching college football (Roll Tide!), and spending time with his dog and family.
